The hotel was originally a private residence, named Broadgate Villa. It was built in 1871 by Isaac Usher, a renowned local gentleman builder from Hawkshead. The original title for the sale of land in 1863 for £204 and 4 shillings still hangs in the hall.

The property first became a hotel, the Ravenswood, in the 1930s and was renamed The Grasmere Hotel in 1984.

The Grasmere Hotel is a delightful small Victorian Country House Hotel and Restaurant set on the edge of Grasmere Village in an acre of informal gardens through wich the River Rothay flows.
